Is it time to clean your mascara wand?

The big question is, is it ok to clean our mascara wands??

I had doubts about 'adding' germs to the wand from the water and tissue but I decided to give my mascara a good cleaning cause I couldn't stand the clumps no more.

I decided to clean my everyday fave mascara, Cosmagic Exte Bomber mascara which was one of the very first few beauty items I've reviewed!

I know we're supposed to throw our mascara away after 3 months bla bla bla... But as long as the mascara does not irritate my eyes, I'll keep going. XD

I WILL NOT ABANDON YOU MASCARA!!

Here's the wand before it's 'cleaning session'. It had loads of fiber stuck in between the combs and the tip, but none of the fibers actually properly transfers to my lashes! The fiber application was clumpy and seriously, clumpy fiber makes clumps super obvious and I really disliked that!

I first wiped off all excess mascara onto a piece of tissue. There was soooo much product all clumped on the wand (pic above) and I really wondered how much product did I actually wipe away. Probably months and months of mascara, but oh well. XD

I finished off by wiping the wand on a piece of facial wipe and running the wand under luke warm water.

VoilĂ !! Clean mascara wand!

After cleaning the wand, the mascara application was very much smoother and the fibers were distributed evenly on my lashes.

I was really glad I gave my mascara wand a good cleaning cause now I can continue to use my favourite mascara for a lil longer!

Btw, I also read that you can clean your wand by dipping it into cleaning alcohol or something like that. That sounds like a good idea, but don't take my word for that. ^.~

Have you ever cleaned your mascara wand before?

Cheers!!

  3. LOL, i've never cleaned mine.. maybe I should start doing that - might explain the crap application of some of my mascaras. Also, *hi-5* I don't throw them out unless they dry out or something goes wrong with it ahhahaha (so cheap T.T)

  4. It was my first time cleaning them and I found it very amusing. XD

  5. Yeah!! Spidery lashes scare me! That's what prompted me to clean my wand! I think cleaning the wand when clumps start to appear can help solve the problem. =D

  6. Hahaha yeah! No point throwing away a perfectly fine mascara, right? Seriously cleaning out the mascara wand was pretty amusing and therapeutic. Lol! Try it!! XD

  7. The thought of cleaning my mascara wands has never crossed my mind before ><"
Seriously need to try this out and maybe even make it a habit!! I clean my eyeliner brush regularly because I'm scared of bacteria getting in my eye, I hate to imagine how much bacteria is on my mascara wands right now D':

  10. At least renew your mascara but keep the blinged up wand D: Must be a lot of nasty stuff in that bottle.. haha! What we recommend sometimes is using a alcohol tissue wipe to clean the wand after each use, or you can spray it with alcohol. But it's safer to use disposable wands on our clients. Even though you've disinfected the wand, you're still pushing air and bacteria back into the bottle :(

  11. Never cleaned my mascara wand before, and have been using the same Lancome one for a while. Funny thing is, I bought a drugstore mascara (Rimmel 100% Waterproof) and now I'm longing to go back to the Lancome... Time to clean it, I think. Haha.

  12. Yeah I clean my eyeliner brush pretty often too but this was my first time cleaning my mascara wand! I'm hoping that by cleaning our mascara wand properly consistently, we'll be able to prolong our mascara's life!

  13. Did you clean yours! I was so amazed by how much product I actually wiped out! Thank you for reading my old post! I love that mascara cause it's super easy to remove! I'm very lazy when it comes to removing makeup. XD

  15. I've never tried Lancome before but I heard a lot of great stuff about Lancome's mascara! Btw, if your mascara's kinda dry, soak the tube from cap down in warm-hot water and it'll help melt the formula! I tried that for some of my old mascaras and they worked! =D

  16. I never did this before, but I think I will now. Great tip! Especially since I don't chuck my mascara every 3 months either (too cheap ahaha). :D

  17. Lol I totally understand! I've been using my current mascara for roughly 9 months and I don't have plans to chuck it anytime soon! XD However, mine seems to be drying up so I guess I'll have to find a replacement soon. -.-"

  18. Oh wow. I've never thought of this... I use many different ones and never throw them away after only three months either, but that's just because I have so many. However, I think my Smokylash mascaras will get a bit of a clean-up tonight. Thanks a bunch for posting this!

  19. ...Okay, I'm going to go clean my mascara wands now!! haha :P

  20. so smart! I always thought it might be my actual mascara clumping but this makes more sense haha. And I hate how you have to throw out your mascara after 3 months. No one uses that much mascara that fast :(

  21. Did you manage to clean your mascara? I have a bunch of mascaras and I never throw them away within 3 months cause they seem perfectly fine to me! =D

  22. Did you manage to clean them?? How was it?? XD

  23. Lol yeah!! I thought it was the formula going nuts itself but I decided the wand brush would be a factor as well. I completely agree with you about that! Seriously no one uses up a bottle of mascara within 3 months even if we pile them on everyday!

  24. Here’s to the love of mascara! Haha. Joking aside, it is important for us ladies to maintain and clean our beauty fixes and accessories since we apply them directly to our skin. By doing so, we are saving ourselves from infections and other beauty issues. Another way to clean your mascara wand is to soak it in hot water. After 2-4 minutes, dab the wand in a paper towel with cold water in it. After cleaning the brush, you can put it inside the tube, and it is ready to be used again.

  25. Would this also work with mascara wands that have bristles? Instead of the plastic applicator? Am I making any sense? Hahaha cause personally I like the bristle kinds more (like the dior one) but I'm also thinking that it'd be super hard to clean >< Maybe dipping it in make up remover would work =S

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah I totally know what you mean! I guess in the case of bristles, you'd wanna wipe them down with a material that's lint free or the bristles would probably end up with a moustache. XD I also read that you could run the wand under warm water and then finish up by dipping them in alcohol. I hope that helps! <3
